About Yanac
Yanac is a small rural village in the Shire of Hindmarsh, in the southern Mallee region of north-west Victoria, about 28 kilometres north-west of Nhill. The name derives from an Aboriginal expression possibly describing bats flying at night, and the settlement grew around the Yanac-a-Yanac pastoral run established in 1846. The surrounding landscape of flat mallee plains and scattered wetlands includes the Yanac Swamp Wildlife Reserve, and the area is dominated by dryland cropping and sheep grazing.
