About Miram
Miram is a rural locality in the Shire of West Wimmera of the Northern Wimmera region in Victoria, located about 10 kilometres northeast of Kaniva on the Melbourne to Adelaide railway line. Named from an Aboriginal word mripiram meaning bough of a tree, closer settlement began in the late 1870s and the railway extension from Dimboola to Serviceton in 1887 boosted wheat farming. George Coles, founder of the G.J. Coles and Co. retail chain, opened Miram's first store in 1888, and the landscape features flat to gently undulating wheat and sheep farming country.
