About Tynong
Tynong is a small township in Gippsland, Victoria, about 66 km south-east of Melbourne at the foot of the Gembrook Ranges on the edge of the drained Koo Wee Rup Swamp. Its name is thought to be an Aboriginal word meaning many fish, and the township grew around the railway station after the Gippsland line opened in 1877. Local industries included sleeper-cutting, timber-milling and eucalyptus oil-distilling, and Tynong granite quarried in the 1920s and 1930s was used for Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance.
