About Tynong North
Tynong North is a locality in West Gippsland, Victoria, about 63 km south-east of Melbourne within the Shire of Cardinia, separated from Tynong by the Princes Freeway. It lies on the margin of the former Koo Wee Rup Swamp at the base of the Gembrook Ranges, the name Tynong coming from an Aboriginal word meaning many fish. Settlers bought crown land here in the 1870s, and timber cutting and sawmilling, later dominated by the Weatherhead family mills, drove the local economy.
