About Mount Burnett

Mount Burnett is a small country town and bounded locality about 72 km from Melbourne, within the Shire of Cardinia. Its post office, opened as Gembrook West in 1885 and renamed Mount Burnett in 1921, closed in 1978. The locality is known for the Mount Burnett Observatory, built in 1972 as Monash University's main astronomical observatory and reopened in 2011 as a public facility.
