About Beaconsfield Upper
Beaconsfield Upper is a town about 45 km south-east of the Melbourne CBD in the Shire of Cardinia. Settlement began with squatters in the 1830s and grew after gold was found in the area in 1872, when small selectors took up land under the Land Act. The name comes from a guesthouse named Beaconsfield House for the British prime minister Lord Beaconsfield. The district became a popular holiday retreat of orchards and guesthouses served by the Gippsland railway, and many homes were destroyed in the Ash Wednesday fires of 1983.
