About Emerald (Vic.)
Emerald is a town in the Dandenong Ranges, about 44 km south-east of Melbourne, spanning the Shires of Cardinia and Yarra Ranges. It grew from gold diggings on Emerald Creek in 1858, named after prospector Jack Emerald, and was later home to Nobelius Nursery, one of the largest nurseries in the southern hemisphere before World War I. The heritage Puffing Billy narrow-gauge railway serves the town, and Cardinia Reservoir, Melbourne's second largest reservoir, and Lake Treganowan lie within the locality.
