About Cockatoo (Vic.)
Cockatoo is a town in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, 48 km south-east of Melbourne in the Shire of Cardinia, in the valley of the Cockatoo Creek. The creek, named by gold prospectors in the 1850s after the large numbers of cockatoos in the area, gave the town its name. The narrow-gauge railway from Upper Ferntree Gully reached the town in 1900, and three sawmills were soon working in the district. Cockatoo was badly hit by the Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983, when seven people died, and residents rebuilt the town; the former railway now operates as the Puffing Billy tourist railway.
