About Murray
Murray is a suburb of Townsville in the City of Townsville, Queensland, named after Lieutenant Colonel Henry William Harry Murray VC who was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1917 for actions at the Battle of the Somme. Murray later commanded the 26th Battalion in Townsville during World War II before being retired on age grounds by General Blamey in 1942. Named on 1 April 1969 and situated in traditional Bindal and Wulgurukaba Aboriginal country, the suburb is not a conventional suburb as all developed land is within the Australian Army's Lavarack Barracks. The southern parts are on the undeveloped slopes of Mount Stuart. Lavarack Golf Club opened in 1972 and closed in December 2021 when Defence declined to renew the lease.
