About Aitkenvale
Aitkenvale is a major commercial and residential suburb located approximately seven kilometres south-west of the Townsville central business district in Queensland, Australia. The area is situated on the traditional lands of the Wulgurukaba people. The suburb is named after Thomas Aitken, who arrived in Townsville around 1867 and established a dairy farm, before subdividing his land for residential sale in the 1880s. Two surviving structures from this early settlement, the Herdsman's Cottage and Cordial Factory, still stand on Leopold Street near the Ross River. Aitkenvale serves as Townsville's principal commercial centre outside the CBD, anchored by Stockland Townsville, the city's largest shopping centre. The suburb features parklands along the Ross River, and during the Second World War it housed a United States Army hospital and a Royal Australian Air Force aerodrome.
