About Whitfield (Qld)
Whitfield is a suburb of Cairns in the Cairns Region, Queensland, located approximately 5.4 kilometres northwest of the Cairns central business district. Situated in the traditional country of the Yidinji people, the suburb was designated as a locality on 1 September 1973 and elevated to suburb status in 2002. It takes its name from Mount Whitfield, a 365-metre peak named by explorer George Elphinstone Dalrymple on 17 October 1873 after Edwin Whitfield, a storekeeper and merchant from Cardwell. The southern portion is residential while the northern portion encompasses bushland within the Mount Whitfield Conservation Park.
