About Freshwater (Qld)
Freshwater is an inner suburb of Cairns in the Cairns Region of Queensland, located 9.3 kilometres northwest of the Cairns central business district on traditional Yidiny Aboriginal country. European occupation began in late 1876 when the Douglas Track and Smith's Track linked Cairns to the Hodgkinson goldfields, and Chinese market gardeners moved in during the late 1870s growing rice, bananas and pineapples. The Cairns to Herberton railway opened in 1887 and Richmond Siding was renamed Freshwater Siding in January 1890. Freshwater railway station is a stop on the Kuranda Scenic Railway and a 22-signposted heritage trail was built in 2009 for the Queensland 150th commemorations. The suburb is home to Freshwater State School, Bunny Adair Park with equestrian facilities and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church opened in 1938.
