About Manunda

Manunda is a flat, low-lying suburb located 3.4 kilometres west of the Cairns central business district in the Cairns Region, Queensland, Australia. Situated in the traditional country of the Yidinji people, the suburb was officially named on 1 September 1973 after the TSV Manunda, a steamship of the Adelaide Steamship Company that regularly visited Cairns. The ship's name derives from an Aboriginal word meaning "place near water." The southern part of the suburb is primarily residential, while the northern section contains sportsgrounds and the historic Martyn Street Cemetery. A commercial and industrial strip runs along Anderson Street, and the suburb is also home to the Cairns TAFE campus and several schools, including Trinity Bay State High School.
