About El Arish
El Arish is a rural town founded in 1921 as a soldier settlement, about 19 kilometres north-east of Tully in the Cassowary Coast Region. Named after El Arish in Egypt where Australian Light Horse fought in World War I, many streets are named after WWI generals and the former railway station houses the El Arish Diggers Museum. Sugar cane and banana growing dominate the surrounding low-lying, high-rainfall area.
