About Caravonica

Caravonica is a suburb of Cairns in the Cairns Region of Queensland, located 14.4 kilometres northwest of the Cairns central business district on traditional Djabugay Aboriginal country. Named by David Thomatis, originally from Italy, who acquired 800 acres in 1884 and named it Caravonica Park after a town near his birthplace in the north-west Italian province of Liguria. Thomatis experimented with various crops before creating a cotton variety by crossing Peruvian and Mexican cotton that gained worldwide reputation as Caravonica Cotton. The suburb lies in the foothills of Queensland tropical rainforests and is home to the southern terminal of the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park on its northern boundary and the entrance to Barron Gorge National Park. Lake Placid, a natural pond in the Barron River, is in the western part of the suburb.
