About Smithfield (Qld)
Smithfield is a residential suburb about 15 km north of Cairns CBD along the Captain Cook Highway, established in 1876 as a rival settlement to Cairns but abandoned after a devastating Barron River flood during an 1879 cyclone. The modern suburb grew as part of Cairns' recent urban expansion, and the Smithfield Roundabout serves as the key departure point for Kuranda, the Atherton Tablelands and the route to Cooktown. The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway terminal lies just south of the suburb.
