About Yorkeys Knob

Yorkeys Knob is a coastal suburb of Cairns in Far North Queensland, set behind a prominent rounded headland on the Coral Sea. It takes its name from George Lawson, a Yorkshire-born fisherman nicknamed Yorkey who worked the beche-de-mer trade on Green Island in the 1880s, and from the rocky hill, or knob, on the coast. Much of the suburb is low-lying sugarcane country, and its long sandy beach curves around Half Moon Bay, home to a marina and boat club.
