About Rich Avon West

Rich Avon West is a rural locality in the North West region of Victoria, located about 142 kilometres southwest of the Murray River in the Shire of Northern Grampians. The flat to gently undulating pastoral country on the Avon Plains near the Richardson and Avon Rivers was first leased by James Horsfall in 1845 with 122,699 acres running 2,400 cattle and 15,000 sheep. Divided into Rich Avon East and West in 1858, the former Rich Avon West shearing shed from the 1860s is the last surviving structure from the West station, and the nearby homestead was owned by the Guthrie family since 1864 who developed one of Victoria's oldest Merino studs.
