About Clematis
Clematis is a small township in the Dandenong Ranges about 42 km south-east of Melbourne, close to Belgrave. Settled from the 1860s and known for a time as Paradise Valley, it was renamed Clematis in 1921 after the climbing plant, to end confusion with another Paradise in western Victoria. The township grew around the narrow-gauge Gembrook railway, opened in 1900 and now the Puffing Billy scenic line, and was a summer retreat with guest houses. Building the Cardinia Reservoir in the 1960s flooded much of its farming land, and the town remains a compact stop on the railway.
