About Bayles

Bayles is a rural locality about 75 km south-east of Melbourne, east of Koo Wee Rup in the Shire of Cardinia, on flat country that once formed part of the great Koo Wee Rup Swamp, drained from the 1870s in one of the largest land-reclamation schemes in Australia. The reclaimed peaty soils became market-garden land, and former swamp areas were divided into farms after the First World War. The district is a major asparagus-growing area, and the low-lying land around Bayles remains flood-prone, as when the Lower Bunyip River overflowed in 2011.
