About Welshmans Reef
Welshmans Reef is a locality in the Shire of Mount Alexander in central Victoria, set between the eastern edge of Cairn Curran Reservoir and the Maldon State Forest. Its name is thought to come from a Welshman who discovered a gold-bearing reef there, consistent with the area's history of Welsh and Methodist settlement. During the gold rush miners worked the reef, and some later turned to farming on the Loddon River flats. A school served the community from 1877 until 1965.
