About Maldon (Vic.)
Maldon is a town in the Shire of Mount Alexander in Victoria, designated Australia's first notable town for its preserved 19th-century streetscape. Gold was discovered in the district in 1853, drawing a rush of about 20,000 diggers, and its rich quartz reefs were mined until the 1920s. The town's mining heritage is protected in the Maldon Historic Area and symbolised by the thirty-metre-tall Beehive Mine Chimney, completed in 1863 and the only stack of its age and size still standing in Victoria.
