About Alma (Vic.)
Alma is a rural locality in central Victoria, about 6 kilometres north-west of Maryborough, situated on Timor Creek at the junction of the Adelaide-Inkerman gold lead. Named after the Battle of Alma in the Crimean War, gold was discovered there in December 1854, three months after the battle, and the settlement was briefly known as Joyce's Diggings. Shallow alluvial workings were followed from 1857 by mechanical mining of deep, wet ground that paid richly for about thirty years; Alma's population reached 673 in 1881. As mining declined, farming took over the worked-over alluvial flats.
