About Timor (Vic.)

Timor is a locality in the Central Goldfields Shire of Victoria, 8 kilometres north of Maryborough. It grew from a gold rush settlement, beginning as Coxtown when gold was found in 1856 and later taking its name from Timor Creek, the watercourse running through the district. Timor lay on the rich deep-lead goldfield shared with Bowenvale, where the Duke and Timor mine, operating from 1869 to 1896, produced a quarter of the gold taken from the Maryborough district. A state school has served the town since 1873.
