About Moonlight Flat (Central Goldfields - Vic.)

Moonlight Flat is a small rural locality in the Shire of Central Goldfields of central Victoria, situated near Castlemaine in the historic goldfields district. The area takes its name from the gold rush era — it was a bustling diggings site where the distinctly Cornish practice of undermining, or driving tunnels beneath other diggers' claims to steal wash dirt, was a frequent cause of disturbances on the fields. The Moonlight Flat Common School operated from 1858 to 1874, and today the locality retains a quiet rural character within the broader Castlemaine goldfields landscape.
