About Castra

Castra is a rural locality in the Central Coast Council area of north-west Tasmania, about 19 km south of Ulverstone. It was settled from the 1860s under the Castra Scheme, an initiative of retired British Indian Army officer Lieutenant-Colonel Andrew Crawford that offered small farms to fellow Anglo-Indian officers; the name comes from the Latin for 'camp'. Today the locality is a scattered farming district, with the Castra Falls walking circuit passing a series of waterfalls along the Castra Rivulet.
