About Stuart (Qld)
Stuart is a rural coastal suburb of Townsville in the City of Townsville, Queensland, located 13.4 kilometres south-southeast of the Townsville central business district. Named from the railway station originally called Ayr Junction in 1902 then Stewarts Creek in 1938 then Stuart in 1939, it is believed to be named after Clarendon Stuart, the first district surveyor appointed in 1865. Bounded to the northeast by the Coral Sea, most of the suburb is undeveloped land. The Townsville Correctional Centre, Mount Stuart Power Station, Sun Metals Zinc Refinery and the Stuart landfill and waste transfer station are major facilities. Stuart State School operated from 1891 to 2013 and was used by the Army as the main Signals Communication Centre in North Queensland in December 1942.
