About Oonoonba

Oonoonba is a residential suburb of Townsville in the City of Townsville, Queensland, located 5.8 kilometres south of the Townsville central business district. The name is derived from the railway station, named in 1880 using an Aboriginal word meaning water or wet ground. Oonoonba State School opened on 15 November 1920 and the old school was later demolished with a new school opening in 2002. The suburb is bounded by the Ross River to the north, Gordon Creek to the east and the North Coast railway line to the south. Once considered isolated from Townsville, subdivision development at neighbouring Idalia filled the gap making it part of the contiguous urban area. The suburb features marshland along the river in the north and east.
