About South Townsville
South Townsville is a coastal suburb of Townsville, Queensland, located on the northern end of Ross Island, just 2 kilometres southeast of the Townsville central business district. A traditional working-class area shaped by its proximity to wharves and railway yards, the suburb developed boarding houses and hostels for single workers and is subject to tidal flooding from surrounding mangroves. From 1973 to 1985 the Black Community School operated in a disused hall behind St Patrick's Catholic Church, established by land rights activist Eddie Koiki Mabo as an alternative state education system. The suburb is home to the Queensland Country Bank Stadium, the Port of Townsville and Palmer Street known for its restaurants and nightlife.
