About Belgian Gardens
Belgian Gardens is an inner coastal suburb of Townsville in the City of Townsville, Queensland, located 3.9 kilometres west-northwest of the Townsville central business district. Originally named German Gardens after a vineyard owned in 1867 by German settler Heinrich Fredrich Alfred Robinson, the suburb was renamed Belgian Gardens during World War I due to anti-German sentiment, one of several Australian place names changed from German names during that period. Townsville North State School opened on 4 July 1887 and was renamed Belgian Gardens State School on 20 June 1930. During the 1919 influenza epidemic the school was converted into an isolation hospital with the army erecting tents in the grounds, hospitalising 195 patients with 6 deaths. The heritage-listed Bishop's Lodge at 13 St James Drive is a notable landmark.
