About Mount Coolum
Mount Coolum is a coastal suburb in the Sunshine Coast Region, Queensland. Named for the 208-metre volcanic plug at its centre, the mountain formed around 26 million years ago from rhyolite. The name derives from the Kabi Kabi word "gulum," meaning "blunt" or "headless," referencing an Aboriginal legend in which the warrior Ninderry knocked off the mountain's head, becoming Mudjimba Island. The mountain lies within Mount Coolum National Park, home to over 700 plant species including rare montane heath. A sandy beach lines the Coral Sea coast.
