About Maroochydore
Maroochydore is a coastal town at the mouth of the Maroochy River on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, the region's major commercial centre. Its name comes from an Aboriginal phrase recorded in 1842, said to mean the place of the red bills, referring to black swans. The town grew from a timber camp, with the first house built in 1884 by the sawmiller William Pettigrew, and is today known for its surf beaches, holiday accommodation and the Sunshine Plaza shopping centre.
