About Pioneer (Qld)
Pioneer is a townside suburb of Mount Isa in the City of Mount Isa, Queensland, located 2.2 kilometres northeast of the Mount Isa central business district and 1,824 kilometres northwest of Brisbane. Named because many European pioneer names are used as street names in the area, the suburb is on the eastern townside of the Leichhardt River which divides Mount Isa into mineside and townside. The suburb is home to Mount Isa School of the Air which has provided distance education to remote outback students since 1964, serving an enormous region from the Gulf of Carpentaria to Birdsville and from Richmond to the Northern Territory border. Also located in the suburb are St Kieran's Catholic School, Mount Isa Special School and Spinifex State College senior campus.
