Kilcoy

About Kilcoy

Kilcoy is a rural town in the Somerset Region of Queensland, located 94 kilometres northwest of Brisbane and just north of Lake Somerset. The name comes from the Jinibara people, the traditional owners of the area, with jini meaning lawyer cane and bara meaning people. In 1841 brothers Evan and Colin Mackenzie of Kilcoy Castle in Scotland took up land and named it after their home town. The Kilcoy Station homestead was built of bricks made on the property and red cedar. The heritage-listed Kilcoy Homestead remains a notable landmark. The Hall of History operated by the Kilcoy District Historical Society is in Yowie Park, converted from a former railway yard. Somerset Dam was constructed nearby from 1935 to 1959 on the Stanley River. The Kilcoy Pastoral Company abattoir was established in 1953. The D'Aguilar Highway runs through the town and notable residents include Olympic equestrian Rebel Morrow who won a team bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
