About Wacol
Wacol is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, located about 17 kilometres southwest of the Brisbane CBD. Bounded by the Brisbane River and Wolston Creek, it includes Cockatoo Island and Termination Hill, named by explorer John Oxley in 1823. The name derives from "weigh coal," referencing a railway weighbridge at the station renamed from Wolston in 1927. Heritage-listed Wolston House (1852) is the only surviving early Brisbane River settlement. The suburb also contains Camp Columbia, a former World War II military base, and The Park Centre for Mental Health, established in 1865.
