About Gailes
Gailes is a suburb of Ipswich in the City of Ipswich, Queensland, located 18 kilometres east of the Ipswich central business district and 23.9 kilometres southwest of the Brisbane central business district. Originally named Dingo Hill by explorer John Oxley in 1823, the Dingo Hill railway siding was renamed Gailes railway station on 16 September 1925 after the Western Gailes Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland. The name Gailes means overgrown by bog-myrtle. Bounded to the north by the Ipswich Motorway and Main Line railway and to the west by Woogaroo Creek, a tributary of the Brisbane River, the suburb was flooded during the 2011 Queensland floods. The land use is predominantly residential with a small amount of undeveloped bushland in the southwest.
