About Mount Crosby
Mount Crosby is a semi-rural outer western locality in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, located 22 kilometres southwest of the Brisbane central business district and 10.7 kilometres northeast of the Ipswich central business district. The Jagera Aboriginal people inhabited the area and had ceremonial grounds on the slopes of Mount Elphinstone. John Oxley explored the Brisbane River in September 1824 and climbed the mountain naming it Belle Vue Mountain. The Mount Crosby Pumping Station and first weir opened in 1892 to supply water to Brisbane with a village of 60 cottages built for workers. The suburb contains over 25 heritage-listed sites on the Brisbane Heritage Register including Waterworks Cottages and pumping station infrastructure from the 1890s to 1940s. Colleges Crossing is a historic ford on the Brisbane River. Mount Crosby is 183 metres above sea level.
