About Southern Moreton Bay Islands
Southern Moreton Bay Islands is an island-group locality in the City of Gold Coast, in southern Moreton Bay, comprising the inhabited islands of Russell, Macleay, Karragarra and Lamb. The islands are part of Quandamooka Country, the traditional lands of the Nunagal, Goenbal and Ngugi peoples, and were subject to native title determinations in 2011. Russell Island, known as Canaipa in the Yagara language, was renamed in the 1840s after Lord John Russell, then Secretary of State for the Colonies, while Macleay Island, originally Jencoomercha, was named after Alexander Macleay, Colonial Secretary of New South Wales. Karragarra retains its Indigenous name.
