About Yarrabah
Yarrabah is a coastal Aboriginal community on Cape Grafton, about 51 km by road from Cairns in far north Queensland, from which it is separated by the Murray Prior Range and Trinity Inlet. It stands on the traditional land of the Gunggandji people, and grew from an Anglican mission established in 1893 by Ernest Gribble. The community received land tenure in 1986 and became a self-governing Aboriginal Shire in 2005. A creole language, Yarrabah Creole, is spoken in the town, and an annual brass band festival draws visitors from the region.
