About Fitzroy Island
Fitzroy Island, known traditionally as Koba or Gabar and originally Goong-Gan-Jee, is a continental island offshore from Cape Grafton, about 29 kilometres south-east of Cairns in Queensland. Named by Lieutenant James Cook in 1770, it became a national park gazetted in July 1989 within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, and is the Traditional Country of the Gunggandji people. Tourism developed from 1969, with a succession of island resorts since 1977; the current Fitzroy Island Resort opened in 2010. The island also retains a lighthouse history dating from 1926.
