About Port Douglas
Port Douglas is a coastal resort town in far north Queensland, about 60 km north of Cairns, set between the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. It was named in 1877 after Premier John Douglas and grew as a port serving the Hodgkinson goldfields via the Bump Track, later shipping sugar before a 1911 cyclone ended its boom. Tourism revived the town from the 1980s, and it is now a gateway for reef and rainforest trips.
