About Machans Beach
Machans Beach is a coastal suburb of Cairns in Far North Queensland, located about 10 kilometres north of the Cairns CBD on the Coral Sea coast. The Yirrganydji people are the traditional custodians, and the suburb was surveyed in 1885 as Barron Beach before being renamed after Richard Machan, the first permanent settler. A rocky seawall protects the foreshore, Redden Island to the north hosts over 200 bird species popular with birdwatchers, and the community is known for its tight-knit character, affordable coastal living and fishing.
