About Goondi

Goondi is a rural locality in the Cassowary Coast Region, approximately five kilometres northwest of Innisfail. Its name derives from the Aboriginal word meaning "elbow", referring to a bend in the Johnstone River. Goondi was once home to a sugar mill that operated from 1883 until its closure in 1987, and the surrounding land is now used primarily for sugar cane and banana cultivation.
