About Goondi Bend
Goondi Bend is a mixed-use locality in the Cassowary Coast Region of Far North Queensland, situated approximately 2.9 kilometres west of Innisfail along a bend of the North Johnstone River. The name derives from the Aboriginal word Goondi meaning elbow, referring to the river's distinctive curve, and the area has been closely tied to the sugarcane industry since farm selections began in 1881 and the Goondi Sugar Mill opened in 1885. The Bruce Highway passes through the locality and Goondi State School, established in 1898, serves the local community.
