About Stretton
Stretton is a southern residential suburb in the City of Brisbane in Queensland, located 17 kilometres from the Brisbane central business district. Named after George Stretton, a settler, postmaster and hotelier at Browns Plains in the 1870s, the suburb was gazetted in 1972. In 1861 Governor Bowen declared a wide area including Eight Mile Plains to Stretton as a Brisbane Agricultural Reserve. The northern part includes several hills while the southern part has more vegetation, joining Karawatha Forest to the south-east and the Calamvale Creek wetlands to the south-west. Stretton State College, a Prep-12 school, opened on 1 January 2006.
