About Redland Bay

Redland Bay is a coastal semi-rural locality in the City of Redland, Queensland, situated approximately 35 kilometres south-east of Brisbane along the western shores of Moreton Bay. The locality is named for the adjacent bay, which derives its name from the distinctive red volcanic krasnozem soil rich in iron oxides. The traditional Aboriginal name for the region is Talwalpin. European settlement commenced in the 1860s and 1870s, when farm selectors cleared dense shoreline scrub to establish agriculture. Redland Bay serves as the principal port for ferry and barge services to the Southern Moreton Bay Islands, including Russell, Macleay, Karragarra, Lamb, and North Stradbroke Islands. From 1953 to 1971, it also functioned as a base for flying boat operations.
