About Macleay Island
Macleay Island is a residential island and locality in southern Moreton Bay, in Redland City, South East Queensland. Known to the Quandamooka people as Jencomercha, a meeting place of spiritual importance, it was renamed in 1839 after Alexander Macleay, a colonial naturalist and NSW Colonial Secretary, and earlier appeared on maps as Tim Shea's Island. Reached by ferry and vehicle barge from Redland Bay, it is the most populated of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands and preserves a heritage trail of early colonial saltworks and sugar-milling ruins.
