About Leanyer

Leanyer is a northern suburb of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, situated on the traditional lands of the Larrakia people. The name first appeared on George Goyder's 1869 survey plans and is presumed to be of Aboriginal origin, though its exact meaning is unknown. During World War II, Leanyer served as a military area with an army post, equipment storage facilities, and gun turrets along the Lee Point coast. Residential development began in the 1970s. The suburb is home to Leanyer Swamp, Holmes Jungle Nature Park, and the Casuarina Coastal Reserve, as well as the popular free Leanyer Recreation Park water park.
