About Jurien Bay
Jurien Bay is a coastal town in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, located 220 kilometres north of Perth facing the Indian Ocean and 195 kilometres south of Geraldton. Named by Louis de Freycinet during the Baudin expedition of 1801 to 1803 after Charles Marie Jurien, a French naval administrator, the first settlement was by Walter Padbury in the mid-1850s and a jetty was constructed in 1885 to 1887 for pastoralism. The town developed significantly with the crayfish industry, now a multimillion-dollar enterprise exporting Western Rock Lobster to Japan and the United States. The Jurien Bay Marine Park and Lesueur National Park, a biodiversity hotspot, are nearby. The Turquoise Way trail is a 14.2 kilometre shared-use path and the town hosts the annual Indian Ocean Festival, formerly the Blessing of the Fleet.
