About Willaura North

Willaura North is a rural locality in the North West region of Victoria, located about 34 kilometres south of Ararat and 217 kilometres from Melbourne in the Rural City of Ararat local government area. On the eastern slopes of the Grampians National Park, the landscape features broad agricultural land with sparse settlement including lignum swamps, a unique environmental feature with walking tracks and interpretive panels. Major Thomas Mitchell travelled through the district in September 1836 writing that a land more favourable for colonisation could not be found, and the railway arrived in 1877 with gold discoveries at Mafeking in 1900 boosting settlement.
